MEET MISTI
Misti Big Eagle-Bayliss, a passionate teacher of 20 years has switched gears from classroom to studio. Her love of clay and creation lead her to seek instruction from the well known Cathedral Art Studio in Regina. Initially pottery was her hobby but it didn’t take long for Misti to realize this passion was much more. Although she enjoyed working out of her home based studio at White Bear Lake, Misti felt like something was missing. It was her desire to still teach others.
The aspect of teaching and her love of clay lead Misti to purchase a building and open a second studio in the beautiful tourist town of Carlyle, Saskatchewan. Misti continues to develop her art through education and exposure to more seasoned clay artists. She is very blessed to have the guidance and mentorship of several professional potters as this journey follows its own path.
“The calming and peaceful experience the clay gives me while I’m working completely consumes me. Feeling deeply engaged in what is transforming, what I feel becomes part of the piece. The sensation of turning mud to masterpiece, in whatever that may look like, intrigues me and ignites the passion I have for pottery.” - Misti
THE WORKSHOPS
The creation of studio space for others has been something I’ve wanted from the beginning. The first class I attended with an artist at Cathedral Art Studio had me hooked! I wanted to be able to offer that experience to others, a dream of opening my own studio and small retail business had its seed planted! A realization came to light shortly after getting started in my personal studio at White Bear Lake; life truly has no guarantees, tomorrow is not promised, it’s what is in this moment. I started my work towards improving and knowledge building.
A local potter, Autumn Downey opened her studio, Glorious Mud, to help me embrace this passion. She continues to humbly guide me in the ways of potting, sharing and transmitting her contagious passion of creating glazes that inspires me. Opening this new space in Carlyle, allows me to share the passion for clay as well as teaching.
BEGINNER CLASSES for Adults
I offer beginning adult pottery wheel classes Tuesday and Wednesday evenings as well as Sunday afternoons. Adults can sign up for classes and experience the beginning stages of throwing on the wheel, prepping their pieces for bisque firing as well as glazing all completed pieces.
The atmosphere is energetic and inviting for all people to experience. Instruction is ongoing throughout classes with plenty of time to explore what you can do with the clay.
WORKSHOPS for Kids
Kids workshops are also offered. Kids have the opportunity to come in and dive into the art of creativity where their imagination is the limit! From hand building to an experience on the wheels. All pieces that are completed will be ready for pick up in a fair time frame.
SMALL GROUP Bookings
Small groups and gatherings are welcome to set up a private time in the Studio to accommodate an experience.
COME ON IN and Enjoy the Space
Sandy Clay Pottery, which originates from White Bear Lake, is also available within the studio. These are original handmade pieces of pottery. Off The Rails Studio offers space to come in and browse while sharing a cup of coffee in hand made mugs, created by a variety of artists, or bring a mug full from Micheal’s Coffee Shop and Bakery, come in to enjoy the space. You will often find me working in the studio, but always open for guests! - Misti
